SCIENCE CENTERS FOR YOUTH
Rashi’s network of science centers for youth supports the national effort to improve the educational achievements of Israeli children in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). Its mission is to reverse the alarming trend of declining science scores among youth and strengthen the scope and level of STEM studies across the country, and especially in the periphery.
Based on the model of the Ilan Ramon Physics Center in Be'er Sheva, the regional science centers offer access to up‐to‐date knowledge and facilities, along with guidance and supervision by professional instructors. Located on the campuses of universities and regional academic colleges, these centers introduce children and youth to the wonders and potential of science and train science teachers in effective pedagogy. They help close the gaps in STEM studies between schools in the center and the periphery and give students the chance to pursue higher education and careers in these fields.
The centers work in cooperation with municipalities and area schools to deliver a continuum of formal and informal programs, with a focus on promoting excellence in STEM fields. A national supervising body will be established to enhance the efficiency, sharing of knowledge and coordination among the different centers.
We see the scaling up of the science centers to a nationwide network as a game-changing initiative that can help cultivate Israel’s first-rate academic research, technological innovation and economic prosperity.
