This unique program nurtures a new generation of scientists, engineers and inventors to lead R&D at universities and in the high-tech industry in Israel. Inspired by an initiative of President Shimon Peres, it was developed in cooperation with the Gifted Students Division of the Education Ministry, academic institutes and the industry.
Future Scientists and Inventors (now renamed Odyssey) identifies exceptionally brilliant and creative 8th grade students, who show strong motivation and a passion for science and technology along with social commitment. At the beginning of 9th grade they join a challenging four-year program that combines academic studies with hands-on work in research laboratories. They are also introduced to practical industry research topics and acquire tools and skills for handling complex problems in a cross-disciplinary approach.
The program began at Tel Aviv Univertity's Unit for Science-Oriented Youth, and was gradually expanded to other leading academic institutes around the country: the Technion, Ben-Gurion University, the Hebrew University and Tel Hai Academic College.
When they graduate, the students are guided toward the IDF technology and intelligence units, where their skills are greatly needed, or to one of the Academic Cadets tracks. Commitment to the students continues throughout their academic studies, to fully realize their potential and fulfill their contribution to Israel’s economy and security.
