Aleh Negev Rehabilitation Village
Goal
To establish a rehabilitation village for adolescents and young adults with severe mental handicaps, near Ofakim in the south
Overview
The Aleh Association operates a network of institutions in Jerusalem, Bnei Brak and Gedera for 230 mentally retarded children and youth, most of them requiring intensive daily care. However, there is an urgent need to provide a suitable framework for the adolescent and young adult residents. The Association has initiated the establishment of a rehabilitative village near Ofakim in the south that would serve the "graduates" of its hostels as well as handicapped children from the south. The Village will provide housing for the residents and staff; special education; sheltered employment; diagnosis, paramedical and rehabilitative services; recreational activities and so on. The Village is also expected to create up to 500 new jobs in various professions - medical and paramedical, nursing, education and rehabilitation, maintenance and administration - in an area suffering from persistent high rates of unemployment.
