Academia
A Unique Route to Higher Education
Goal
To enable students from the periphery to gain full matriculation and enter higher education in order to obtain an academic degree.
Overview
Established in 2001, Academia targets average-achievers in high schools in the northern periphery, who have the potential to achieve an academic degree but may not realize this potential unaided. The program provides them with educational reinforcement, and with social and emotional support that builds self-esteem and motivation. Academia is the only long-term program of its kind, accompanying pupils from 10th grade, through matriculation, and then on to higher education.

The program works with high school pupils for three years, on several levels:
Educational reinforcement – extra tuition to enable all students to take maximum units for matriculation in compulsory subjects, e.g. raising the level of the class from 3 to 5 units.
Emotional support – discussions about the value of higher education; helping students believe in their own potential; setting their sights on being accepted to higher education institutes.
Parental involvement – involving parents from the start of the three-year process; providing lectures to emphasize the importance of higher education; keeping them updated on their child's progress.
