Overview
Through Sport is an innovative program that harnesses sports activity within school as a platform for integrating educational support and instilling positive social and personal values, such as self-control, healthy living, and respect for authority and for others. The program coordinator in each school, together with the teaching staff, builds an educational reinforcement program according to the needs of the children, concentrating on basic subjects of math and language, and emphasizing motivation towards scholastic achievement.

The program began as a pilot in 2004/5, and currently includes about 6,000 children aged 9-16 in over 40 localities in the periphery. Children from all religious backgrounds participate: Moslem, Jewish, Druze, Christian.

Structure of the program
Three models have been developed so as to provide a suitable solution to the diverse target group. In each model, the central program is a combination of sport, studies and social activity. On average, the program offers around 10 hours a week of combined activity, including training by a professional coach, the science of sport, homework assistance, study reinforcement, social-educational activities focusing on preventing violence and rejecting drugs. A hot meal is served on every day of the program.

In addition, all participants receive a sports kit so that even children without financial means can have their own outfit. Every group in Through Sport has a coordinator and team of teachers and professional trainers. The coordinator is responsible for implementing the program, and for coordinating between the teachers and trainers.

As well as training sessions and the educational and social activities, central sports events are held at regular periods, such as tournaments, outings to major sports games, enrichment programs, visits and activities with parents.

Through Sport provides participants with 14 weekly hours of activity, over 4 or 5 days a week. These hours are divided as follows:
1. Educational reinforcement and homework assistance – 8 weekly hours
2. Personal and social education – 2 weekly hours
3. Sports training – 4 weekly hours

In addition, every participant receives a sport kit containing a sports bag, summer strip, winter strip, socks, and ball.
